After Commander Keen, id Software's imprint on the first-person shooter genre with Wolfenstein 3D still retains its excitement.
The game, where we play the struggle of American soldier BJ, whom we rescue from a Nazi prison, in six adventures, is a real FPS with complex maps, hidden rooms, locked doors, weapon and NPC variety, and end-of-level surprises. Full game and even the shareware version has been completed multiple times by millions of players and is still being played. Even some people still mod the game with Floedit.
If you are interested in codes, you can open the project with Borland's Turbo C, you can obtain your self-compiled WOLF3D.exe file by simply following COMPILE / BUILD ALL process after removing the SIGNON and GAMEPAL OBJ files from the file list and manually adding them from the OBJ directory.
"What can we do with these codes?" John Carmack, who introduced the codes to the public in the 1995 distribution, answered this question, he says:
- New weapons and monsters can be added.
- New textures, long walls and vertical movement capability can be implemented.
- A multiplayer game using Doom's sersetup/ipxsetup drivers can be developed.
Wolfenstein has always been more of a taboo compared to the FPS games that followed it, and Wolf3D enthusiasts who always tried to make Wolf3D better with the other game engines, even with the Source engine after Quake and Unreal. Whether it is the most ported FPS game in the world from old consoles to today's mobile phones and tablet PCs. It will always be remembered as a cornerstone where the Shot'em up genre evolved into First Person.
